The televised election and the rise of Nick Clegg
Some people predicted that the election would be the first ever ‘online election’. However the televised Prime Ministerial debates & consequent rise in the Liberal Democrat support on the back of the strong TV performance by Nick Clegg has highlighted the importance of ‘old’ media. Raymond Snoddy writing for Mediatel prior to the televised debate got both the importance of TV in the election and the rise of Clegg absolutely correct. Read it here.
The controversial Digital Economy Act
Passed in the run up to the General Election, the Digital Economy Act could potentially affect a wide range of issues concerning both the internet and the distribution of media in general. It will be fascinating to see if the bill manages to stem the seemingly inexorable rise in online piracy that has already hit the music industry hard and is increasingly an issue for all types of online media content.
Video gaming
This has been a huge industry for some time and it is no surprise that gaming has attracted the attention of advertisers. We presented a paper in February at the MRG – in-game advertising flourishing through the downturn. It featured Max doing an impression of Charlie Brooker!
Online news content
Also it is interesting to see pay-walls emerging in the world of online news content. In November last year we looked at the monetisation of online content (particularly micropayments) at the MRS New Media conference – again the paper is available in our downloads section.
